Tribute & Message From The Family

On July 17, 2019, Augustus (Gus) Cicala, 88, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his devoted family and his beloved dog, Busty. Gus was born on October 28, 1930 to Sebastiano (Busty) and Mary Cicala. He graduated from Upper Darby High School in 1948. He proudly served in the US Navy during the Korean War and loved telling stories about his adventures on the high seas and being a Tin Can Sailor.

Gus met and married his beautiful bride, Sally Carroll, in 1958 and had five children. As he raised his family he enjoyed coaching football in the community, engaging actively with St. Gabriel parish, camping with his family, and spending time on the Jersey Shore. He dearly loved God, his country, and his family.

Gus enjoyed a long career in Printing and Graphic Arts working for Goodway Printing Company, Chilton, and TV Guide. In retirement Gus traveled and was an avid ballroom dancer appearing on the Oprah Winfrey show dancing the Tennessee Waltz. He also lovingly raised two of his grandchildren, Tim and Nicole after his son John passed away. He loved having them with him sharing his wisdom, giving advice, laughing, singing old songs, and telling stories about the good old days. His silenced voice will be missed by so many, including his faithful companion, Busty.

Gus was welcomed home to Jesus by his wife Sally and his son John, who he missed dearly. He is survived by his son Gus (Susan) Cicala; Daughters Rosemarie (Jim) Donzanti; Sally (Mark) Campetti; Christine (Scott) Allen; thirteen grandchildren; and eleven great grandchildren with one new little one on the way. He is preceded in death by his Parents and Brother Jack (Mary Ann) Cicala.

Funeral services will be held on Monday, July 22, 2019 at 11:00 AM at Saint Gabriel's Catholic Church in Norwood. The family will greet friends from 9:30 to 10:45 AM prior to the mass. The burial will be private. All arrangements are being made by Cavanagh Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the John S. Cicala Trust Fund, mail to TD Bank, 969 Baltimore Pike, Springfield PA 19064.

One time, when I was in high school, I watched as Mr. Cicala brought paper bags full of groceries from his parked car in the front of his Norwood home, into the kitchen. I was startled to see this. I remember asking Sally, Your Dad grocery shops??!! She looked at me and said, Yes as if it was the most normal thing in the world. At the time, I thought only women did the grocery shopping, because that's all I ever saw. So for me, I believed Gus Cicala to be the first liberated man I'd ever met. --KC

Dear Cicala Family,
I feel that I know so many of you through your sister/Aunt Rose. Nicole and Tim, my heart goes out to you both as I have met you and spent time with you when you visited Rose and Jim in Naperville. I know how much you will miss your dad/grampa / great grampa.
I know he knew that you all loved him and watched over him until it was time to see his son and wife again. You are all in our thoughts and prayers through this sad time ♥

I will miss you very much. Our time together meant so much to me. Your wit and smile would sometimes help me more than I was helping you. Goodbye great friend
